Gardening, How To Grow Tomatoes
The Tomato, or Solanum Lycopersicum is part of the nightshade family. And when grown to a top quality produces juicy large fuit that can be eaten straight from the vine . Whether purchasing plants from your local nursery or starting tomatoes from seed, there are a few basic steps to follow to ensure your crop is laiden with tomatoes for the growing season. Depending on what you plan on doing with your tomatoes, whether you will be cooking, preserving, using in salads, or eating stright off the vine. There are many varieties to choose from. Sweet 100 ís a prolific fruiter, and great for your salads, or eating fresh from the garden. Depending on what you use to spray your plants for insect etc, remember to wash all tomatoes before eating.Another variety is Roma. Good for salsa, pastes and tomato sauce.Other varieties include, Early Girls, Early Boys, Big Boys, Big Mamas, Sweet Baby Girls, Beefsteaks, French Rose hybrids, Big Rainbow, are but to name a few. All you have to do is choose which variety will best suit your needs.
If you are going to grow tomatoes plants from seed, they need between six to eight weeks in a container,before they can be planted in the ground Any containers Yoghurt pottles, egg cartons can be used to start your seeds. Starter soil or potting mix needs to fill each container, pressing down to compact the air and help when watering. The growing instructions are written on the back of the seed packets, follow instructions carefully as different varieties may differ in cultivation. Label your pots with date and variety. Anything can be used for this, from store brought sticks to popsicle sticks.
Keep your plants in a sunny position.
IRemember to keep seeds moist with water and by placing a plastic bag over them. Small greenhouse containers are also available. Once seeds have germinated then remove plastic and watch your plant grow. Cull out weaker seedlings to enable stronger ones more room to grow. When plants have a second pair of leaves it is time to transplant these seedlings to your garden or a large pot.
You may wish to acclimatize your plant to outdoor conditions, put it in the direct sun during the day and bring it in at night. After a few days, the tomato plant will have adapted to the new surroundings and can be transplanted to the outside. Put your plants outside after the threat of frost, in a shady, wind and rain protected location.
You may prefer to buy small plants from your garden centre already established, select dark green plants that are stocky in size and have no fruit. The fruit will stunt the plant growth and the total yield will be reduced. Tomatoes are one of the few plants that will tolerate being planted deeper than they sit in the pot.
Tomatoes prefer a slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.2 to 6.8. The term pH balance refers to acidity or the alkalinity of your soil from a numerical scale of 1.0 to 14.0. The neutral point on the pH scale is 7.0. Higher than 6.5 indicates alkaline soil, lower than that indicates acidic soil.
You can test yours soils pH with kits readily available from the garden centre.To raise the soilís pH, add lime, use sulfur to lower the pH of alkaline soil. Fertilizers and compost will also change the soilís pH over time. Adding organic compost will improve any soil structure. You can purchase or make your own compost.
For large healthy tomatoes, give them plenty of room to grow. 24 inches between rows, and 24 inches between plants. Give the plant some form of support to grow apon. Cutworms love tomatoes, A nail, or newspaper strips or paper cup surrounding the stem will help prevent these worms.
Place tomato plant in hole and back fill with soil until it is well compacted.
Most tomatoes take 100-days to bear fruit, then its time to enjoy your crop ! ! !
