Cuba City Guide – Matanzas
Located on the banks of the San Juan River, on the northern coast of Cuba approximately 55 miles away from Havana, Matanzas City was founded on October 12, 1693, although it is known that this territory had been populated since 1510, approximately when the aboriginal people living there assaulted and killed a group of Spaniards. This historical fact is very relevant because even though the conquest and colonization of Cuba had not yet begun, this bloody action gave the name to the region. The settling in the village was a direct consequence of the occupation of the New Spanish fleet by the Dutch admiral Pieter Hein in 1628. Due to its closeness to Havana and its magnificent open bay, Matanzas had become the area ideal for a maritime haven.
It was also necessary to stop the smuggling of woods, furs and dried meat by the English, Dutch, and French sailors, as well as pirates and privateers during that time. They came inland to look for their food supplies or for careening their vessels. That is why the word buccaneer came to life; they were not pirates but smugglers.
The vast richness of the aboriginal culture that exists still in Matanzas province makes it a privileged land, and subject to constant research being carried out; because only in this way thousands of years of history accumulated underground will see the light. It is estimated that this region was one of the first populated by Cuban natives. The history of the aboriginal communities in Matanzas has records of the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods, especially around the courses of the rivers Yaití, Camarioca, and Canimar; the latter can be visited on excursions that depart from Matanzas City, Havana City and Varadero.
Matanzas is called the city of the bridges because of the large number of them crossing over the rivers Yumurí and San Juan. A great number of those bridges are part of the National Patrimony due to the technologies used during its construction. The city is also known as the Venice of Cuba; the channels around the city were of a paramount importance during the 19th century, and because of the development of an unusual cultural and intellectual movement there, many people began to call it the Athens of Cuba.
Among the main attractions in Matanzas there is the Sauto Theater, a jewel of the Italian architect Daniele Dell’Aglio, where very important figures in show business have performed, such as Sarah Bernhardt, ballet dancer Anna Pavlova and guitar player Andrés Segovia. The pharmaceutical Museum Ernesto Triolet is another one, an old drugstore founded in 1882 that still preserves the shelves of precious woods; and an impressive collection of bottles, labels, and old tools used to make the medicine during the 19th century.
The danzón, considered the national dance of Cuba, was born in Matanzas. This rhythm developed into what is today known as son or salsa. The first danzón was entitled “Las Alturas de Simpson” and was composed by Miguel Faílde who adapted in a Cuban way the European contredanse
The visitor arrives in Matanzas on a modern highway that skirts the northern coast of Havana and passes by many places with amazing views of incalculable beauty, like the ones that can be enjoyed from the Bacunayagua Bridge (the highest and longest in Cuba) where the Yumurí Valley opens, showing hundreds of thousands of Royal palm trees. Another option to arrive there is less comfortable but very colourful, which is to travel by the Hershey train, the last electric train that still works on the island. It departs everyday from Casablanca, on the east bank of the Havana Bay, covering in three and half hours the distance between Havana and Matanzas City.

Ok I am having a Winter Wonderland Party with no (Christmas sutff santa, etc..) for ages 17-20 I didnt want to have full meals because most teens dont like that and its going to be at 6 pm.

I was going to serve the drinks in plastic martini glasses. Except for Hot cocoa, mocha shake, chocolate shake, water and pop.
You seem to have a lot of sweet stuff. I would suggest either going all sweet or savory with one or two sweet things. You also have a lot of drinks. Also, mozz sticks aren’t really good room temp, so you will be constantly frying them. I would really rethink your menu. I am not trying to be mean, just trying to guide you in the right direction.
Since it’s winter wonderland I wold suggest that you keep all of your food and drinks warm. Also, there’s nothing wrong with a dessert party. Vary the level of sweetness. For example your chocolate coated pretzles are sweet and salty. A nice flavor combo. Sugar cookies are great. What about a rugelah or cheese cake type dessert for something sweet that’s not really sweet. Tart apples and warm caramel. Maybe some cholocalte fondue. I would skip the cold drinks all thogether except for pop and water. Hot chocolate, have candy canes for swivel sticks. Hot apple cider with cinnamon sticks for swivel sticks. Chais, Lattes, etc. You get the point.
